Maemying/Tymbaling

2011 - 2012 / Collaboration with Zachary G. Fraser
Sponsored by Korean Foundation for Advancement of Science & Creativity, Platoon Kunsthalle

This project evolved out of our progressive attempts to simulate the extraordinary complex sound production mechanism of cicadas and applies its essential workings to create a visually descriptive and strangely evocative soundscape. The crank pulls the arched plastic inward which then springs back into shape, mimicking how cicadas use their muscles to engage two elastic membranes ('tymbals') and its clicking ribs. The prototype was adapted into complex designs and sculptural works that have been exhibited in various venues.

Materials: Acryl, MC gears, motion sensor, mini motors, paper clips, wire
